The initial draining of Skwácháy̓s [False Creek East] starting in 1917

The draining of Skwácháy̓s went on for well over five years; often intermittently because of World War I, the bankruptcy of the major company involved in the operations, and the formation of the Canadian National Railway. In this scene, taken approximately from Quebec and Central Streets, we see a growing patchwork of new bridges and dykes along with remaining tidelands increasingly isolated from the sea. In the centre of the image, in the distance, is East 1st Avenue.
